HIV and other TTI Testing Proficiency Training
for Blood Service Facilities - FULL COURSE

Course Description

Medical Technologists for Blood Service Facility (BSF) are required to have a special proficiency skill in testing for HIV and other Transfusion Transmissile Infections (TTI) to ensure blood units issued to patients are safe for transfusion. The training would equip medical technologists with knowledge and skill in ensuring that blood for transfusion is tested for common TTIs and released as safe for transfusion.

The hybrid training consists of lectures, laboratory work, and demonstrations. The first part of the training is a joint lecture and demonstration of the basic theories and gudeilines in relation to HIV and other TTI Testing, which will be accessed through the Learning and Management System. The rest of the course extensively covers bench work on serologic testing, documentation, and quality assurance.

The participants will be granted a written practical examination and completion of the panel testing. Participants will be given a Certificate of Proficiency if the have passed a grade of 75% for their overall assessment. In case of failure, a Certificate of Attendance will be given.

Objectives

At the end of this training course, each participant will be proficient in testing for HIV and other Transfusion Transmissible Infections in blood units collected from voluntary blood donots. Specially, at the end of the training, the participants are expected to:

  • Organize proper donor selection and interview
  • Enumerate the protocol for Donor Recall and HIV Counseling
  • Explain the basic immunology of infection
  • Discuss the transmission of infectious agents by blood transfusion
  • Discuss the epidemiology and transmission of HIV
  • Differentiate screening and confirmatory testing principles available for blood donor screening
  • Explain the importance of setting up a testing algorithm for blood safety
  • Discuss the pertinent policies in relation to blood safety
  • Demonstrate basic biosafety principles applicable to a serology laboratory
  • Demonstrate proper pipetting technique
  • Troubleshoot cases of potential errors in the laboratory
  • Trace the referral system of RITM and SACCL samples for confirmatory
  • Discuss the External Quality Assessment process and its importance
  • Detect the present of malaria parasites in a given blood smear
  • Correctly perform screening tests for HIV, HBV, HCV, Syphilis and Malaria

Admission Requirements:
  • Accomplished Online Registration Form
  • Copy of Certificate of Inclusions issued for year 2025
  • Copy of Licensed to Operate issued for year 2025
  • Copy of valid PRC ID
  • Endorsement Letter from Pathology Head of Head of the agency certifying that the applicant is practicing Medical Technologist in the laboratory and that the training fee shall be shouldered by the management and not by the participant.
